Dollar Store Speech Ideas {Linky}

Ahhh, I love the Dollar Store or any place where I can get therapy materials that cheap! What SLP doesn't? And to be honest the kids LOVE the stuff I find there, probably more than the expensive games I have purchased. And lets face it, most SLPs have a tight budget to work with. I am so excited to link up with Kristin from Talkin' with Twang to share some of my dollar store finds and ways I use them.

The Dollar Store has tons of containers. I got these to store edible treats and for a Granny's Candies game that is missing the game board. I have also bought different colored containers which we use to throw balls into and score points or for sorting.

I have found books, window clings, and reinforcement toys. The books shown above are perfect for working on possessives. Window clings make such cute classroom decorations and always get my students talking.

Target's dollar spot has these adorable mini erasers and mailboxes. The erasers make perfect for game pieces. And themed stickers are perfect to use on worksheets or for following directions. 

I have also found fidget toys, reinforcements, and toys for my treasure box.

Turkey Talk Blog Hop

Happy November! I can't believe it is already November! Where has this year gone? I have to admit that this is my favorite time of year though. The changing colors, yummy foods and smells, and of course, all of the festivities around the holiday season. Wacky Wednesday Book Club: Pirates Don't Change Diapers

Hi friends! Happy Wednesday! As I was digging through my books trying to decide which one to talk about this week I found the sequel to "How I Became A Pirate".

My students LOVED reading this book last year! If you don't have "Pirates Don't Change Diapers" you can grab it here from Amazon.

Funny Directions: App Review & Giveaway

Every year I have quite a few students with goals for following directions. I was really excited when Speecharoo, a new app developer, contacted me to review their new app Funny Directions. 

This app is adorable and so much fun. It targets 1,2,3 step directions, basic vocabulary, attention, and memory. 

When you open the app you are greeted by an adorable kangaroo named Kit who takes you to the home screen. On the home screen you have 4 different scenes (classroom, bedroom, beach, and park) to choose from and each scene has 3 different levels. The scenes are perfect since they are familiar environments for our students. 

Here is a look at the different scenes:

Within each level there are 10 directions that must be completed. After the child completes a direction correctly, they are given reinforcement from that particular character. For incorrect responses, the directions are repeated for the child on the first attempt. If they respond incorrectly on their second attempt, it will provide visual and verbal prompts. Visual directions are provided at the top of the screen. Directions can be repeated as many time as needed within each scene. You can also turn the verbal commands and text off and on by going to settings. The arrow in the bottom right corner allows you to skip to the next direction. The house icon in the top right corner allows you to return to the home screen at any time. The app also collects data which can be emailed at the end of each game. 

Once all 10 of the directions are complete Kit the kangaroo appears with balloons for your student(s) to pop.

This app is a must-have for students working on following directions.

Wacky Wednesday Book Club: How I Became A Pirate

Hey friends! Happy Wednesday! I hope all of you enjoyed the Back to School sale and found lots of awesome deals. 

I need to confess... I love pirates! Talk Like A Pirate Day in September is one of my favorite days during the year. The kids get so excited because group becomes a little different. We make up pirate names for each other and wear eye patches. One of the books we love to read is... 

This book is about a little boy, named Jeremy Jacob, who is at the beach with his family until the pirates show up and take him away. They need his help. On his journey he learns how to talk like a pirate and act like a pirate, but he also learns there are no books or good night kisses on the ship. Jeremy decides he does not want to be a pirate, he just wants to go home to his family. 

I created a companion to accompany this book which covers a little bit of everything!

There is a worksheet to identify story elements.

There are two sequencing activities: 

There are 24 comprehension question cards and 3 additional blank cards for you to add what you need. There is also 8 yes/no questions included. 

Next, there are 15 tier two vocabulary cards with 3 answer choices plus an additional 3 blank cards for you to add what you need. Your students will use context clues within the sentence to identify the meaning of the words.

Jeremy learns some pretty awful manners from the pirates, so I included an activity to talk about good manner/bad manners.

We couldn't forget about the Pirate vocabulary! There are 11 pirate words with matching definition cards and 2 additional cards. 

I have many students who work on sentence structure and verb tenses. There is a past, present, and future sorting activity with 24 verb cards. 

And 16 irregular verb cards with 3 answer choices.

Next we have sentence scramble, which includes 6 color coded sentences. Students will arrange the words into the correct order to formulate sentences. 

There are 4 describing mats, articulation worksheets, and an open ended game included.
